Fifteen tried group games for clubs, parties and school sessions — no special equipment required.
Games keep sessions lively and quietly build real skills. All of these work with cones, poles and a bit of space.
Warm-up games
- Follow the leader — copy paces and turns in a line.
- Pace call — walk, trot, canter on command; last to change sits out a round.
- Statues — halt squarely the moment the music stops.
Skill games
- Bending race — weave through cones, fastest clear run wins.
- Cone catch — collect and carry cones one at a time.
- Pole line — trot over spaced poles without touching one.
- Circle challenge — ride the roundest circle around a marker.
- Straight line duel — two riders, two lines, straightest wins.
Jumping games
- Gamblers' choice — fences worth different points in ninety seconds.
- Knockout height — one fence, rising height, one attempt each.
- Chase me Charlie — the classic, best played with a low ceiling on height.
Team games
- Relay — teams of four, baton handover at the line.
- Musical markers — one fewer marker than riders.
- Dressage jigsaw — each rider performs one movement of a test in turn.
- Fault and out — jump until you make a mistake; longest run wins.
Running a good session
Explain, demonstrate, then play. Keep rounds short so nobody waits long, and rotate teams so the same rider does not always win. Finish with a calm game — halts, circles or statues — so everyone leaves settled.
Watch the floor for slip hazards, and drop jump heights for mixed-age groups.
