Hobby Horse Birthday Party Ideas

A ready-made plan for a hobby-horse party: timings, games, prizes and what to ask the venue.

Hobby-horse parties work brilliantly for ages five to twelve, indoors or out, and need very little equipment.

A two-hour plan

  • 0:00 Arrive, choose or decorate a hobby horse.
  • 0:20 Warm-up games — follow the leader, statues.
  • 0:35 Bending race through cones, in teams.
  • 0:50 Low jumping — chase me Charlie with a firm height limit.
  • 1:10 Food and drink.
  • 1:35 Dressage-style musical markers.
  • 1:50 Rosettes for everyone, group photo, home.

Equipment

Eight cones, four poles, two low jump stands, a speaker and enough hobby horses to go round. Ask guests to bring their own where possible and keep a few spares.

Craft option

A make-your-own hobby-horse head or a decorate-your-own bridle station suits younger children and doubles as the party bag.

Prizes

Rosettes for everyone plus small novelty awards — neatest turnout, best team spirit, bravest jumper. Avoid a single winner-takes-all prize at this age.

Venue questions

  • Is the floor non-slip?
  • Can we use music?
  • Is there space for food away from the riding area?
  • What time can we set up and must we clear by?

Safety

Keep the jumping area clear of spectators, cap heights low, and have one adult watching rather than joining in. Water on the table throughout.

Cost-saving

Village halls and scout huts are cheap and ideal. Borrow poles and cones from a local club — most are happy to lend for a party if you ask kindly and return them clean.
